Newsflash - Councillors refuse application for Ashton Gate superstore

Well I never! At the Council House tonight councillors on the South & East Planning Committee have rejected Sainsbury's proposals for a massive supermarket on the current site of Bristol City's ground at Ashton Gate. Simply Southville understands it was rejected by four votes to two, with two abstentions.

Well done to the people in Southville, Ashton and Bedminster who have campaigned to stop this unnecessary development. Let's hope Bristol City can find an alternative use for the site which is more suitable, so it can fund its plans for a new stadium.

More to follow tomorrow...

Typical council decision! Don't they want this wonderful city to move forward? How could they turn down an investment opportunity like this and the jobs it would have created for local people? I would like to know how two councillors managed to abstain from voting. What's the point of them being on the committee?

  4. All these people moaning after the event....can't they understand that others might not actually find football very important

And spare us the jobs/investment bullshit.

  5. I say knock Ashton Gate down, and make a Travellers Camp there instead, return the Tip area where the stadium is proposed and return it to its former use..... a Tip. Mr Lansdown, invest your money in a far more deserving City and good luck to you.

  6. Do some people not realise that Sainsbury's is already there? It is simply moving across the road to a slightly bigger store, how can this have a negative impact? It's not as if they are dumping another big supermarket in the area, I wonder how many people who campaigned against this move will be doing their Friday shopping in Sainsbury's or Tescos anyway. It's time these traditionalists realised that this was an opportunity for the city and for football to move forward, yes, it is nice to have small independant shops and stores and these can coexist with bigger mainstream stores as is evident at the moment but we have to realise that blocking any sort of ambition the likes of Bristol City might have out of fear is simply not good enough and shows a lack of imagination. Times change and we have to move on!
