Council confirms 20mph zone for Southville

So a quarter-of-a-million pounds is going to be spent on traffic signs in Southville to tell motorists that the new speed limit in the area is 20mph. No money to actually enforce the new limit or for physical traffic claming measures such as speed bumps. You can't argue with the fact that if you have an accident at 20mph the likely damage to other cars or pedestrians will be less, so from a safety point of view that's good. So will it encourage more people to cycle and walk around the area - one of the other stated aims? We think not. Perhaps proper cycle lanes, more considerate parking at junctions and crossings in better positions would?

  1. The £250K is not just for traffic signs and not just for Southville. It also covers the cost of the legal work, preparation, design, and monitoring before and afterwards, with resident surveys about attitudes and perceptions.

As for "proper cycle lanes, more considerate parking at junctions and crossings in better positions" ... they are already happening across the city.

Slow but definite progress, I hope.

Can we have some in Southville please?

  3. I'd argue that 20 mph everywhere and shared roads is better than having a bike lane full of parked cars and, when you do managed to use one, have motor vehicles squeezing past at speed, or sounding their horn because you've moved out of it.

  4. £250k is not much when lives are saved and serious injuries avoided. Roll on the 20mph limit.

  5. Two points.

Steve L - I'm talking about proper cycle lanes that have a kerb between them and the road. Not the dodgy painted lanes on busy roads we have in most places in Bristol.

Sacredspring - It only saves lives if people actually drive at 20mph. No enforecement or traffic calming as part of these plans. That's the problem.

  6. I agree that we need proper cycle lanes with a kerb between the cycle lane and the road (especially routes towards temple meads and to the city center)
