A bridge too far...

... for cars in the future. According to the Evening Post Prince Street Bridge will be closed to cars within four years to make way for the new bendy-bus route.

The bridge closure will be part of a Transport and Works Act Order to be submitted by Bristol and North Somerset councils early in the new year. The order will provide the legal consent to build the £48 million first rapid transit route in Bristol, which is hoped to be up and running by 2013.

  1. Couple of points if I may...

    (1) The "bendy-bus" is used by Evening Post and others as shorthand for the Bus Rapid Transit, but there is no decision on the bus design.

    (2) Once the officers indicated plans that pedestrians, bikes and buses only would use the Prince Street Bridge, I asked that we make the information public.

What do readers think? Your title perhaps suggests that you think it a bad idea? We are trying to encourage people out of their cars onto buses or perhaps to walk or cycle. I was looking at some electric bicycle ideas yesterday.

  2. Jon - thanks for the comment.

    (1) What are the options for the buses then? How can a route be planned if you don't know the size and turning abilities of the vehicles?

(2)Mixed views. The recent closing of one lane hasn't created traffic chaos in the area. But it does cause confusion at the bridge - cyclists switching lanes at the last minute and mixing pedestrians and bikes. The proposal might help this - one lane for the bus and bikes and one lane for walkers. My bigger concerns are about the route before the bridge. Damage to the New Cut area and the harbourside. Did I read somewhere about sharing the route with the Harbour Railway and not running the bus when the trains are running?

  3. How can residents oppose this! I use this road, and shutting is it isn't in the interest of the majority of citizens.

As a resident, I'd oppose. It's not up to anyone except me to encourage me out of my car onto a bus or walk or cycle.

    Why not:

    1. Ask the public what they would prefer - road closed or status quo?

    2. When the status quo is voted for, work out how best to help the motorist?

    Instead of BCCs usual:

    1. We want aclaim for being an eco-bicycling city, and we all work in one office building, so can easily all get the bus.

    2. Sabotage the traffic controls with pointless light changes and closing vital routes.

    3. Use this to introduce a congestion charge to finance our own expansion?
