It appears Simply Southville made a mistake in criticising the City Council for wasting £35,000 on two new 20mph zones in the city, including one proposed for Southville (see yesterday's story)
Councillor Jon Rogers (the City Council's cabinet member for transport) has told Simply Southville that the correct cost of the proposals is £350,000, not £35,000. Yes over a third-of-a-million pounds for speed limit signs but with no resources to enforce the 20mph limit.
The Council is consulting on its proposals until the 1 October. You can find more details abouth the consultation on its website. We'll be making our opinion known, will you?

yes Tony I will - but I doubt if many others will as too few people will be aware that their opinion is currently being sought.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am sure Cllr Jon Rogers genuinely wants people's opinions, you could be forgiven for thinking his view is not shared by the council officers who designed this consultation.
Where are the information leaflets inviting us to respond? Answer - in a few libraries. That's it.
Look on their website then? Your link above goes straight to consultation finder but for those without a link to follow it isn't straighforward. Try typing 20mph or 20mph pilot consultation into the council search box. There is a 'your opportunity to respond...' option - looks promising but in fact it asks you to wait for the statutory consultation next year (when it is too late to change anything).
The details of how to have a say now, whilst it is still possible to influence the plan, are hard to find - buried in the 2 information leaflets which are slow to download with an average broadband connection- or on 'consultation finder'.
What, I wonder, will happen to those responses that are received? Given a rather half hearted effort in seeking our opinions, why should we believe they will be securely collated and considered? I have politely asked for such an assurance but am still waiting.
