Well I went down to Ashton Gate this morning to look at the details for the proposed new Tesco on the stadium site. I found it rather patronising to be told that a new Tesco superstore would be good for my community and give me more choice because both Sainsburys and Asda are overcrowded.
The event was ran by Trimedia one of the UK's leading public relations agencies. The feedback form was deliberately worded to give a 'favourable' response for Tesco/City. The event was about a new Tesco superstore on the site but the questions asked was: 'Do you support Bristol City Football Club's ambitions for a new stadium'. Well I'm sure most people do, but not at any cost.
If we are to stop this development we need to get organised, and get organised quickly

I was down at Ashton Gate myself this morning. Like you I was suspicious of the direct link made between Tescos and the football club which suggested that opposition to the store showed a lack of support for the club and vice versa. The truth is that they are two separate issues.
ReplyDeleteI too felt patronised by a woman, whose name I didn't note, who claimed that it was unimaginable to expect someone to do their shopping locally on foot. I had news for her when I told her that I was just that person.
You're right about the need to get organised, and soon. I have been forwarded details of a Tescopoly training and network day in London on 4 July which I cannot attend but am replying to investigate the possibility of something more local.
What do you propose is a viable use for the site?
ReplyDeleteIt looks to me like Tesco are the only viable purchasers at the moment. If it goes ahead then it will have little or no impact on the North Street shops. Those that shop there, like me, do so by choice. I have Asda on my doorstep and Sainsbury's up the road, but I buy most of my stuff from North Street.
A new Tesco will make no difference, it will simply attract Asda and Sainsbury's car-shoppers. More traffic? Yes. Another dull, unimaginitive supermarket owned by a scarily large global corporation? Yes. Damage to the thriving businesses on North Street? No.
Great post Tony. You are right about needing to get organised and quickly! Great to see local people coming together against the Tesco proposal in Southville.
ReplyDeleteI've been campaigning against Tesco in Knowle (they want to covert a local pub, The Friendship Inn, into a Tesco Express) and have again demonstrated their determination and persistence in trying to get their way. If I can help in any way please let me know (I've taken a keen interest in several aspects of the BCFC new stadium issue, as reported on my blog).

I can't see it having any impact on local trade. I am a local resident and shop on North Street despite the fact that I have the option of going to Sainsbury's.
ReplyDeleteThis won't affect the shopping habits of anyone in our house.
